Site quality guidelines

It is not the intention of The Furry Web Directory to censor sites from listing simply because they're adult oriented or have been provided by large domains (like GeoCities, Tripod, etc.). However, sites must meet the following requirements.

Nothing that's illegal in the USA

Sites that encourage or engage in activities deemed illegal by the Supreme Court of the United States of America, or sites that contain links to other sites that do so, will not be indexed. Illegal activities are, but are not limited to, deviant sex acts (rape, pedophilia, bestiality, or other acts of sexual abuse that are performed with at least one member not giving or unable to give consent), murder, terrorism, drug use, anarchy, treason, copyright infingements (illegal MP3 & MIDI file sharing, art rip-offs, etc.) and discrimination against groups of people based on conditions deemed illegal by the United States Supreme Court (race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.).

No excessive advertising

No more ads than necessary on ANY of your pages. The Furry Web Directory realizes that many (if not all) free web space providers push ads through your site, so one or two is OK. This rule is meant to prevent the listing of "ad sites" whose sole purpose to exist is to gather money from ad impressions and is not meant to discriminate against owners of free home pages. However, if your free web hosting provider is pushing more than one ad per page, The Furry Web Directory seriously encourages you to try a free web host provider like FurTopia.

No redirection or pop-ups on close-out

If someone tries to get off your site and they are automatically redirected back onto it or any other site, or if your site proceeds to open any pop-up windows, then your site will not be indexed.

Proper and just warning about adult content

The Furry Web Directory will not refuse to index your site simply because your site is adult-oriented. But we do ask that you give some type of warning before letting someone enter blindly. Likewise, we will give just warning on our page about your site being adult-oriented.

Good HTML coding and page layout design

Take a little consideration of "the have-nots" and take a little pride in what you do! The Furry Web Directory doesn't ask you make the most beautiful site in the world, but sloppy HTML coding, dead links, and/or sloppy page layout will result in your site not getting listed. Don't put form before function! Some comparativley ugly sites have made it into this directory while the prettiest have been routinely rejected. Why? Read on:

Construction

The Furry Web Directory will not list sites that are significantly under construnction.

Dead links

This is one of the most common reasons a site is rejected. All internal links must work! We'll usually let one or two dead links slide if, and only if the dead link is not noticeable or if the links are outside links to other sites. The Furry Web Directory suggests using Xenu Link Slueth to ferret out broken links, which runs on Windows and Linux (using Wine).

External links

All files embedded in your web pages must originate from your web site, unless the embedded files come from counters, guestbooks, shops, journals, and other such services that give you implicit or explicit permission to embed files from their servers into your web pages. Again, The Furry Web Directory suggests using Xenu Link Slueth as it will "tattle" on such files.

Browser compatibility

Make sure your web site works properly with the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Mozilla. Linux and Macintosh users may substitute Opera for Internet Explorer because it copies Internet Explorer's formatting almost to T. As Netscape uses Mozilla builds for its browsers, users may substitute Netscape for Mozilla. Users are also forewarned that Netscape doesn't build as often as Mozilla, and therefore something may or may not work in Netscape that does not or does work in Mozilla. Netscape 4 is too out of date and, go figure, does not comply to standards well enough to be considered a browser to be compatible with anymore. Your site will be rejected if basic functionality breaks in one of the approved browsers.

Monitor resolutions

Not everyone has a monitor capable of displaying 1600x1200, so make sure your site doesn't become inaccessible at 800x600. (Some people have monitors that can only do 800x600.)

Speed

Not everyone has an ISDN/Cable/DSL connection. Your pages and their content should not total more than 45KB unless your have low- and high-bandwidth versions of a page. Basically, if a 56k user has to wait more than 10 seconds to load every page of you web site, you'll be rejected.

Overall style

Not everyone wants to strain their eyes against a clashing background/text combination. No one wants to read text that flows all over the page with no sense of direction. And no one want to guess how you navigation works, or have your navigation get in the way of actually navigating. This is perhaps the most judgmental consideration of all.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions accepted by the online form only

Don't write, email, or otherwise contact The Furry Web Directory to submit your web site. Everyone has to go through the same process and shall be subjected to the same criteria as everyone else. Fair is fair.

Only one listing per site

Unless you get approval for multiple listings, your site can only be indexed once. The web pages are created automatically from a database, and an attempt to have more than one URL from the same site will simply be rejected.

Do not make multiple requests

Please give us up 2 weeks to get around to your submission. Repeated submissions don't get you to the top of any list — they only piss us off if as we have to wade through multiple submission of one site. If you're found out to be making multiple requests within the two-week period, you'll be knocked off the index and put "under probation". Repeat offenders will be knocked off permanently!
